Maximum Color Protection

One of our top service categories has always been color. Our team has years of experience, combined with our continued education programs to achieve all of your hair color fantasies. However, with any color service, professional level protection at home is mandatory to keep your color looking its freshest. We’re going to review some of the issues that can effect your color and the ways to protect it.

One of the most common ways to cause color degradation is through the use of non-professional, non-color safe shampoos. If you have ever had your hair colored professionally you have probably heard your stylist say that you need color safe shampoo. There are multiple factors that go into this, and just because your shampoo is expensive or popular does not always mean that it will protect your color the most. Firstly, a truly color protective shampoo should maintain your hairs pH at a level of 3.5-4.5. Hair is naturally acidic, and an acidic environment helps to keep your cuticle lowered and color molecules stabilized. Altering the pH level of the hair will naturally cause your color to fade. In addition, many non-professional shampoos have strong detergents that will quickly remove color molecules from your hair. Professional color preserving shampoos and conditioners are specially designed with ingredients to help boost the vibrance of your color, stabilize the color molecules, and provide filters for environmental aggressors. Two of our favorite options for color protective hair care are KEVIN.MURPHY’s EVERLASTING.COLOUR regimen and ORIBE’s Beautiful Color collection.

We previously mentioned that environmental aggressors can also lead to color degradation. These can include pollutants from the air, chemicals found in hard water, and UV rays from the sun. There are a few different approaches to protect from these environmental factors. KEVIN MURPHY’s EVERLASTING.COLOUR regimen does provide protection from many of these aggressors. The WASH helps to remove hard water buildup from the hair, and the LEAVE-IN will help to provide UV and pollutant protection. ORIBE’s Conditioner for Beautiful Color, Glaze for Beautiful Color and Power Drops for Color Preservation all provide UV ray and pollutant protection. A filtered shower head will also help to remove hard water chemicals for the benefit of your hair as well as your skin. We are working on a partnership with the brand Jolie that has a wonderful filtered shower head replacement. Other leave in products, such as Oribe’s Invisible Defense Universal Protection Spray will also provide UV, pollutant, and heat protection.

The final, major, contributing factor to color fading is from thermal styling. Thermal styling tools such as curling irons, blowdryers, and flat irons produce incredibly high heat levels that will instantly vaporize color molecules from the hair. It is always important to use a heat protectant that guarantee’s up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit of protection. In addition, lowering the styling tools temperature is important. For styling purposes your tools should not be set higher than 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Most tools offer high heat levels for professional use during treatments but are absolutely not necessary for daily styling.

Think of your hair like an expensive car. You wouldn’t purchase a luxury vehicle, like a Porsche, and then drive it through the woods. If you spend time and money allowing us to beautify your color the last thing you or your stylist wants is to watch it fade quicker than it should. There are many different product options that will provide protection from all of these aggressors. Discuss your daily routines and current regimen’s with your stylist and see what options would suit your hair the best.
